AN UNSETTLED IDENTITY

Jana Schulz (b. 1984; lives and works in Berlin) initiates encounters on film and in photographs with men previously unknown to her, in which intimacy emerges in the process of shooting: performative, shared, situational. She observes structures and dynamics within social groups, enriching her documentary approach by integrating fictional elements.

With her works, she explores the inner world of male relationships; in that spirit, her most recent photographic series raises questions about masculinity on the threshold of adult life. At its center stands a portrait of the South African Bathenkosi Sphesihle Luphalule, his play with common role models and the search for his true self. Tetris B Mountaingoat prompts reflections on identity beyond conventional categories. With a text by Logan February.

The book is edited by Rebecca Wilton and published by DISTANZ in 2026.
