Identity in Suspension
Jana Schulz (b. 1984, lives and works in Berlin) initiates filmic and photographic encounters with men initially unknown to her, in which proximity emerges through the process of image-making: performative, collaborative, situational. She observes structures and dynamics within social groups, expanding her documentary approach with fictional elements.
Through her work—including in her most recent photographic series, she explores the inner world of male relationships, raising questions about masculinity at the threshold of adulthood. At the center of this body of work is a portrait of South African Bathenkosi Sphesihle Luphalule, his play with common gender roles, and his search for selfhood. Tetris B Mountaingoat invites reflection on identity beyond conventional attributions. With a text by Logan February.
The book is edited by Rebecca Wilton and published by Distanz in 2026.
