We are happy to invite you to the lecture Stop Making Sense by Laurenz Brunner on the occasion of the launch of his new book Dictionary of the Illegible on Friday, 6 Nov 2026 at 7 pm.
Dictionary of the Illegible explores the limits of language – its beginnings and its ends – from humanity’s earliest marks to the dissolution of modern alphabets before our eyes. Mapping more than 400 examples of illegibility drawn from Indigenous cultures to imagined future civilizations, the book spans contemporary art, science fiction, politics, architecture, and technology. Dictionary of the Illegible proposes illegibility as a strategy for navigating a world increasingly governed by visibility, efficiency, and total surveillance. In this lecture, Swiss graphic and type designer Laurenz Brunner reflects on the decade-long research behind the publication, tracing his personal fascination with the unreadable and its relevance in an increasingly digitised world. In a world obsessed with clarity, speed, and instant comprehension, perhaps what we cannot read is precisely what needs our attention.
The lecture will be held in English. Free entry, bring your friends :-)
