Nicolas Moufarrege: Mutant International
Nick Mauss
Michael C. Vazquez + Kaelen Wilson-Goldie
Alexandro Segade
While Nicolas Moufarrege’s name all but disappeared following his too-early death, CCA Berlin and Bidoun are committed to bringing attention to his largely unknown body of work, while also using it as a springboard for a broader discussion about art and erasure, queer aesthetics in 20th century art, and the cultural legacies of the AIDS epidemic. On March 12, a public symposium organized by Bidoun featuring Nick Mauss, Michael C. Vazquez (with Kaelen Wilson-Goldie), and Alexandro Segade will offer multiple lenses through which to view Moufarrege’s idiosyncratic oeuvre, in part by speaking to and about the cities in which he lived and worked—storied cosmopolitans enclaves, from 1950s Alexandria to 1960s Beirut, 1970s Paris to 1980s New York.
The symposium will be held in English. Free entry. No registration required.

He is a founding member of the group My Barbarian, whose recent 20-year survey exhibition was presented at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Segade’s writing has appeared in Artforum, Yale Theater Journal, and the NYU Press publication Keywords for Comics; he is the author and illustrator of the graphic novel The Context, published in 2020 by Primary Information. Segade is an Assistant Professor in the School of Visual Arts, University of California, San Diego.
